First of all I should mention that they will have the barrels out for canned food donations outside the bengals game this sunday Nov 21st. So if you are going, take something with you to help stock the free store.
Anywho, the complex where I live is doing a canned food drive as well. So, when I went to the store today I figured I'd pick up a few thinks to donate. I figure I'll just get a few things each time I do a major grocery trip which is pretty much once a week. Well, as I hit the canned veggie aisle, I started to think about this...
How much thought do most people put into what they put into a canned food barrel or donation spot? I picked out a few cans of mixed veggies, some potaoes, a can of yams and some corn (thew in a can of coup as well) and started to think that I did pretty good with my selections.
Then I thought to myself that next time I'll just get a couple of the big family size cans instead of a bunch of the regular size ones.
So, here is my question.
Do you actually think about what you by for or donate to a canned food drive, or do you just kinda get the stuff you like and go with that?
Neither way is incorrect, just wondering.

Our parish has a collection for the people of St. Leo's parish every month. Since Mr. Sluggo does the grocery shopping, I'll speak for him. He buys a lot of staples for the drive, thiings like spaghetti and meat sauce to go with it, tuna fish , large cans of soup and vegetables, mac&cheese, peanut butter and jelly.
Since both of us are diabetic he usually buys cake mixes, when they are on sale and uses many, many coupons also to get things for the drive. He usually has about three large bags a month and takes it up to church when there is no one around so that other people will not see him bring it in. He doesn't want others to think he is putting on a show for them. He also leaves coupons that people can use and has been known to take toilet paper & paper towels and other cleaning supplies. He is a very good person.

Well, I usually go with "popular" foods, that is I would be more likely to donate a can of corn than one of rutabagas. Also, I try to get things people like that I think are not often donated, like coffee and canned meat. Tuna and peanut butter are big favorites of mine to donate. So I do put some thought into the donations.
Then again, there was the one time when I THOUGHT I was getting cream of chicken soup and somehow ended up with cream of asparagus, which nobody in the house would eat. Yes, that ended up in the food barrel.

I was thinking next time to maybe get some heartier soups or some beef stew or chili or something like that.
I usually just do veggies and soup, and it's good to get things that are kid oriented as well as (like chicken noodle or tomato soup).
